Biopuncture and Acupuncture Injection Therapy for Back Pain in St. Petersburg Fl 33702 727-502-3464

New Acupuncture Treatment that helps reduce back pain, sports related pain, arthritis and fibromyalgia pain.
A botanical injection therapy "biopuncture"  helps stimulate your body's natural healing process.

Biopuncture is grounded in conventional diagnosis. Based on several decades of clinical experience and research, biopuncture is a safe, effective new tool to fight pain. It can be used alongside conventional treatments or when conventional or alternative treatments fall short. It is not a stand-alone treatment. Typically, in a sport, spine and pain practice, the best results occur when the patient can combine biopuncture with good nutrition, which improves their body’s ability to heal and lessen tissue inflammation.

A Harvard MD treating chronic pain has seen great results in treating pain with severe and often "irreversible" pain.

The National Center for Health Statistics reports that approximately 4 in 10, or 75 million, Americans live with chronic pain (back pain, arthritis, joint pain, tendonitis, shoulder pain, nerve pain, overuse injuries etc). To put this into perspective, pain afflicts more people than diabetes, heart disease/stroke and cancer combined according to American Academy of Pain Medicine. Among other factors, we know that pain is more common in women, with increasing age, and also after traumatic injuries. Arguably, chronic pain needs to be on every physician’s short list of the top health issues facing patients.

How does biopuncture work?
Biopuncture is a therapy using mostly plant-based ultra-low dilution product formulas which are injected into specific body regions to relieve pain and inflammation. The majority of injections are micro-injections with a very small needle just under the skin or into the muscle. One of the benefits of directly injecting the area of pain appears to be a “turbo effect,” or a much faster healing response.

In biopuncture, small doses of products are injected in order to stimulate or “wake up” the natural healing processes. The healing effect comes from “inside” your body – not from the products themselves. It’s the reaction of your immune system, which will produce the proper reactions to regain natural healing.

How is biopuncture different from acupuncture?
Biopuncture is not the injection of homeopathic formulas into acupuncture points. Biopuncture does not follow acupuncture meridians; the skilled practitioner instead looks for local “pain points” and “origin points” in the affected region. A pain point is likely to be a tender superficial nerve, inflammed tissue or trigger point (muscle knot).

What are the most common micro-dose formulas used in the US?
The most common products used in sports medicine and pain practices are Traumeel®. Lymphomyosot®, Spascupreel® and Zeel®.  Traumeel® is used to reduce pain and swelling. Lymphomyosot is used for lymphatic drainage. Zeel® is used for arthritis. Spascupreel® is used for muscle spasm. Each of these formulas contains a combination of botanical and mineral ingredients, i.e. Traumeel ® has arnica montana to reduce swelling, comfrey to decrease joint pain, chamomile and St. John’s Wort to reduce pain, and calendula (marigold) and echinacea to stimulate the immune system. The product which is best researched and most widely used in oral, topical and injectable forms is Traumeel®.  (Ed. note: The author has no financial relationship with Traumeel®; however, much of the published research focuses on this product.)

What conditions are typically treated with biopuncture?
The common factor is pain and inflammation, be that in a soft tissue or joint or in the lining of the respiratory or gastrointestinal tract.  Each of these tissues has nerves that become chronically inflamed and cells that secrete chemicals that initiate and maintain pain and inflammation.
  •  Musculoskeletal problems: sprains and strains, joint pain, tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, shoulder pain (rotator cuff syndrome, impingement), mild to moderate arthritis, back/neck pain, nerve pain, painful scars, residual pain after surgery
  • Medical problems: asthma, hay fever, irritable bowel, eczema, bronchitis, migraine headaches and irritable bowel syndrome

What can a patient expect if they choose to pursue biopuncture treatment?
Most people, unless they have a true needle phobia, are surprised by how well they tolerate the injections. Very small needles are used for the majority of injections. The number of injections per session depends on the nature and severity of your problem.

An elbow problem typically requires 5-10 specific injections. Common ankle sprains or acute injury heal within a few weeks, usually more quickly than if left without treatment. Chronic pain over many months or years may require several weeks or a few months of treatments.  I tell most of my patients that they will have treatments up to about 2 months; usually by week 4, both the patient and I can see objective results.  If a patient has significant medical illnesses, the course may be longer or ineffective. This treatment does require more patience than cortisone injections for instance because we are trying to heal the problem and not simply suppress the symptoms.  Biopuncture is not meant to treat serious illnesses such as infections or cancer. Patients with severe depression, fibromyalgia, auto immune disease (lupus), multiple sclerosis or other major illness may not respond at all or may only be partial responders.

Symptomatic relief may take a while, especially when the problem has been there for months or years. However, when dealing with fresh injuries, these injections can give results very quickly.

Dry Skin

Dry Skin

Dry skin is akin to dandruff. Dandruff is dryness of the scalp, but dry skin can plague the entire body. Our largest organ is the skin so when it is dry, everyone can see it. Dry skin can crack and bleed from the lack of moisture. Restoring moisture to the skin is the only way to stop the dryness.

*. Cucumbers work to combat dry skin. Have you seen the women at the spa with cucumber slices on their eyes? That is to relieve tired eyes, but that cucumber juice will restore moisture to the face and other areas of dry skin.

*. Honey is great also. Mix it with a little rose water to create a skin moisturizer that can be used all over the body, wherever dry skin is a problem.

*. The same aloe Vera that is used for burns and scrapes works wonders for dry skin. That’s probably why so many companies use it as an ingredient in their lotions and other skin softeners. Pure aloe Vera works better. Simply massage the healing juice of the plant on the dry skin areas to restore moisture.

*. Have you ever had chicken pox? The bumps dry your skin out and make it itchy. Many people use oatmeal to combat the itchiness. This same treatment can be used for people with dry skin. Create a paste using oatmeal, vanilla extract, baking soda, and warm water. Add the paste to running bath water.

Menstrual Cramps

Menstrual Cramps

It is the monthly cross that women have to bear.  From the time of puberty until they reach menopause, most women will have a menstrual cycle each month except during pregnancy.  For many women and young girls, the cramping of the uterus can prove to be debilitating each month.  Here are some home remedies to combat menstrual cramps and get you moving again.

* Eating certain vegetables before and during menstruation can lessen the pain from the spasms. These are not the usual veggies eaten but on the bright side, you get to try a new taste. Papaya, white pumpkin, and bitter cucumber are among the strange vegetables that can help.

* Sesame seeds are surprisingly helpful when it comes to relieving menstrual pains. Mix some sesame seeds in a glass of water twice a day for pain. Boiling allows the seeds to steep. Strain them out before drinking the water.

* Heavy blood flow can lead to anemia. Eating iron-rich foods can stem the tiredness and rebuild the iron in the blood to replace what is being lost.

* Pain and excessive bleeding can be alleviated by boiling coriander seeds in water. The drink is not too tasty but good for the pain.

* Eating bamboo leaves are good for stopping menstrual pain.  Regular consumption can regulate irregular periods.

5 Key Nutrients for Optimal Health

As a nutritionist, my practice is built around maximizing nutrient intake and conversion and synthesis within the body.  For many, our day to day lives extracts or minimizes nutrient intake or worse, we are void of many key nutrients.

When I begin work with a new client, we'll often assess their nutrient levels via a blood based micronutrient test provided by ALCAT labs. This test is key for being able to aid the client in nourishing their body but it also can help us identify how and why nutrient deficiencies are integral to the root cause of whatever ailment or situation they are in.

What I've noticed over the past 4 years in working with clients utilizing these labs, there are 5 common nutrient deficiencies:
  • Calcium
  • Choline
  • Magnesium
  • Vitamin D
  • Vitamin E
Calcium is key for building strong teeth and bones and aids in nerve and muscle health.

Choline helps heart and brain function and even reduces breast cancer risk.

Vitamin D is a powerhouse - it's really a hormone as more research finds its hormonal links.  Manufactured in part by the liver, a healthy, detoxed liver is essential with this vitmain.  Vitamin D aids bone health and improves immunity, lowers risk of cardiovascular disease.

Vitamin E slows the aging process as it fights free radicals. It also reduces the risk of Alzheimer's disease and certain cancers.

If you are dealing with a weakened immunity, slowed surgery recovery, fatigue and any diagnosed disease or illness- it's a good idea to get a micronutrient test done.

And if you are consuming pharmaceuticals (prescription drugs) it's definitely essential to test your micronutrient levels to see where these drugs might be creating deficiencies.

MUD PACKS

MUD PACKS
The nature cure practitioners at present are making increasing use of moistened earth in the treatment of diseases. The use of mud packs has been found highly beneficial and effective in the treatment of chronic inflammation caused by internal diseases, bruises, sprains, boils and wounds. This mode of treatment is normally adopted in conjunction with a proper scheme of dietary and other natural therapies.

The advantage of mud treatment is that it is able to retain moisture and coolness for longer periods than cold water packs or compresses. The cold moisture in the mud packs relaxes the pores of the skin, draws the blood into the surface, relieves inner congestion and pain, promotes heat radiation and elimination of morbid matter.

A mud pack isprepared with clay obtained from about ten cms. below the surface of the earth, after ensuring that it does not contain any impurities such as compost or pebbles. The clay is then made into a smooth paste with warm water. This is allowed to cool and then spread on a strip of cloth, the size of which may vary according to requirements. The dimensions of the pack meant for application on the abdomen are generally 20 cms. X 10 cm.X 2.5 cm. for adults.

Mud packs have been found to be a valuable treatment of diseases relating to general weakness or nervous disorders. It can also bring down fever and is beneficial in the treatment of scarlet fever, measles and influenza. The mud pack is prescribed for swellings, eye and ear troubles, gout, heumatism, stomach troubles, kidney and liver malfunctions, diptheria, neuralgia, sexual disorders, headache, toothache and general aches and pains. The mud bandage, after being placed on the body, should be covered with flannel or other protective material. The pack is applied for 10 to 30 minutes.

As the abdomen is the seat of most diseases, mud pack applied to this part of the body can cure many disorders including all forms of indigestion affecting the stomach and bowels. It is most effective in decreasing the external heat and breaking up the morbid matter. It also aids the inactivity of labour pains and for this purpose, the pack may be renewed every hour or two.The mud pack is also helpful as an alternate treatment. The area under treatment is first given fomentation for five to 10 minutes until it is well heated. Mud is then applied directly to the skin for five to 15 minutes, depending upon the reaction required.

Hot and cold applications are useful in relieving chronic pains, intestinal cramps and lumbago.Alternate application helps to relieve discomfort caused by flatulence and intestinal obstructions. It is also helpful in amoebiasis, colitis, enteritis and other inflammatory conditions of bacterial origin.

SPINAL BATH

SPINAL BATH
The spinal bath is another important form of hydrotherapic treatment. This bath provides a soothing effect to the spinal column and thereby influences the central nervous system. It is given in a specially designed tub with its back raised so as to provide proper support to the head. The bath can be administered at cold, neutral and hot temperatures. The water level in the tub should be an inch and a half to two inches and the patient should lie in it for three to 10 minutes.

The cold spinal bath relieves irritation, fatigue, hypertension and excitement. It is beneficial in almost all nervous disorders such as hysteria, fits, mental disorders, loss of memory and tension. The neutral spinal bath is a soothing and sedative treatment, especially for the highly strung and irritable patient. It is the ideal treatment for insomnia and also relieves tension of the vertebral column. The duration of this bath is 20 to 30 minutes. The hot spinal bath, on the other hand, helps to stimulate the nervous, especially when they are in a depressed state. It also relieves vertebral pain in spondylitis and muscular backache. It relieves sciatic pain and gastrointestinal disturbances of gastric origin.

Why does mint taste cold?

Why does mint taste ‘cold'?

We’re sure you have all experienced the‘cool’ sensation induced by eating a mint, and the reason why this happens is due to the active ingredient called menthol. When we perceive something to be hot or cold, this is due to electrical signals from the nerves which come into contact with the hot or cold thing’. Our brain then interprets these electrical signals as instructions such as that is hot, don’t touch!' or ‘that is cold’.Mints usually contain menthol. Menthol has the ability to affect the pores on our nerve cells which changes the electrical activity of the cell. This change in electrical activity corresponds to the same change that would take place it something cold came into contact with the cell. The cell interprets the change in activity due to menthol as a change in temperature and sends that information to the brain. This accounts for the ‘coldness’ which we experience when eating a mint.
